A method for correcting a defect depth value in a depth map image is disclosed. The defect value corresponds to a "noisy pixel" located on a continuous smooth surface and an interpolated "flying pixel " located along the edge between the foreground object and the background object. The method includes the steps of: accessing a depth map of a scene including a foreground object and a background object; detecting and identifying noisy and interpolated depth measurements in a depth map using a method; And determining and applying a correction for each of the detected defective noise and interpolated depth measurements using the coefficients. By providing a corrected defect depth value to the depth map image, the edge is faced at depth and the subsequent surface is planarized, allowing for additional image processing with higher efficiency and robustness.
