The invention relates to an internal combustion engine and a method for generating energy by means of expansion work in internal combustion engines. The invention has for its object to provide a way to energy-efficient oxygen supply into the combustion chamber of a self-compacting internal combustion engine. According to the invention the object is achieved with an arrangement for carrying out an intensified combustion, for the automatic pressure increase of the combustion gases and their use in an internal combustion engine for performing mechanical work, that in the combustion chamber an oxygen storage material is present, so that by the incorporation of oxygen in the oxygen storage material in the combustion chamber a self-compacting combustion process is possible.
