An iron - aluminum - alloy consists of approximately 40 vol. -% to about 70 volume% -% iron - phases, of about 3 volume -% to about 60 volume -% of intermetallic phases, and the remainder being made of aluminum - phases. Furthermore, in the case of a piston for an internal combustion engine at least one region of a first annular groove at least partially recessed and with the iron - aluminum - alloy filled. The alloy is, by a thermal spraying process on a surface with a temperature between about 150°C and about 400°C. The piston is produced in such a way that at least one region of a first annular groove at least partially being left out and the recess then by the process for the preparation of the iron - aluminum - alloy is filled.
