The invention relates to an iron-aluminium alloy consisting of approximately 40-70 vol% iron phases, approximately 3-60 vol% intermetallic phases and the rest being aluminium phases. The invention also relates to a piston for an internal combustion engine, wherein at least parts of at least one region of a first annular groove are recessed, said recess being filled with the iron-aluminium alloy. Said alloy is produced by means of a thermal spraying process on a surface having a temperature of between approximately 150°C and 400°C. The piston is produced in such a way that at least parts of at least one region of a first annular groove are recessed, said recess then being filled by means of the method for producing the iron-aluminium alloy.
