The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for operating an exhaust after-treatment 300, in which a diesel particulate filter DPF is regenerated during operation, comprising the steps of: measuring a current differential pressure (ΔP) via the diesel particulate filter (DPF) at a current exhaust gas volumetric flow rate (V_AG) and - determining a current correction factor (AscheΔP_K) for a differential pressure (ΔP); - Determining a lower differential pressure (ΔP - MIN) in a predetermined time interval at a certain exhaust gas flow rate (V_AG), and - Comparison of the lower differential pressure (ΔP - MIN) with a predetermined current reference value (Ref value). According to the invention, it is provided that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is passively regenerated during operation, and calculating a corrected differential pressure from the differential pressure (ΔP) and the actual correction factor (ash ΔP_K), wherein - without a time being determinable the differential pressure (ΔP) is influenced only by an ash load and not by a soot load of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), the actual correction factor (ash ΔP_K) is determined at least by the steps: - depending on the comparison, calculating a new correction factor or maintaining the previous correction factor ( Ash ΔP_K) as the current correction factor.
