The method for providing a warning of radio-dose-relevant space weather events at cruising altitudes comprises the following steps: acquiring radiation data of the atmospheric radiation, in particular the ionizing radiation in the atmosphere, providing a radiation model for 3D spatially resolved estimation of a radiation field at cruising altitudes of the earth's atmosphere estimation of the 3D spatially resolved rates of the effective radiation dose on the basis of the acquired radiation data and of the radiation model, - dividing the continuous dose range based radiation dose rate scale into a discrete, d. H. graded radiation dose rate scale with individual, adjoining value ranges of increasing radiation dose rates and assigning in each case an index to each value range, wherein a first range of values is between a radiation dose rate of zero and a predeterminable first upper limit, a second value range between the first upper limit and a second upper limit, which is equal to a predefinable multiple of the first upper limit, and any further value range between the upper limit of the next smaller value range and an upper limit which is equal to the predefinable multiple of the upper limit of the next smaller value range, and - is given as a warning, the index of that range of values within which the estimated radiation dose rate is within a predeterminable range within the earth's atmosphere.
