A protective garment comprising an outer shell and a thermal barrier coating positioned within the outer shell such that the thermal barrier coating is positioned between the outer shell and a wearer wearing the garment. The thermal barrier coating has at least two regions of elastic material, each elastic region having directional elongation properties such that each elastic region has greater elasticity in an associated particular direction than in other directions, and the particular directions of the at least two elastic regions are not are parallel.
