The invention relates to a method, a device and a system for the automated determination of optical densities or the change of optical densities of reaction mixtures in shaken reactors in the current shaking operation. Currently used methods and devices are often unreliable, prone to environmental and process factors, or require shaking operation interruptions that adversely affect process control. The object of the invention is to provide methods and apparatus for the automated determination of optical densities or the change of optical densities of reaction mixtures in shaken reactors in the current shaking operation, which operate reliably under different environmental and process conditions. This is achieved by a new measuring method, in which the periodically fluctuating reaction mixture distribution due to the shaking process is used to record shake-conditioned, periodically fluctuating measuring points 20/21 of transmission / scattered light measurements. All measurement points 20/21 of a measurement process are combined into a measurement series 34, from which the optical density and / or its change as well as further process parameters can be determined with high reliability by means of suitable mathematical methods. The invention is particularly useful in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, chemical and biochemical screening and optimization and process monitoring applications.
