The object of the present invention is to be able to measure in a much simpler manner than hitherto known the internal state of catalysts, emission control systems and exhaust aftertreatment systems in motor vehicles, trucks, stationary incinerators or similar devices in situ contactless. The invention consists in a cheap and easy-to-implement system that solves the described measurement task using existing hardware (wireless communication systems) and existing software (coding and signal processing methods of wireless communication systems). It is proposed to use the catalyst volume as a communication channel between two terminals of a wireless communication system. The most important parameters in this digital message transmission are functions of the properties of the transmission channel and thus the properties of the catalyst. For example, the bit error rate (BER), the packet error rate (PER), the receive field strength indicator (RSSI), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are suitable for this purpose ), the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) or other detectable features of the transmitted signals.
