A method of adjusting a state of charge in an electrical energy storage device of a hybrid powertrain system includes monitoring a plurality of parameters of an electrical energy storage device and determining a discharge power capacity of the electrical energy storage device based on the monitored plurality of parameters of the electrical energy storage device. If the discharge capacity is less than a first threshold, a charge level adjustment mode is activated. The state of charge adjustment mode includes increasing a commanded state of charge to an increased state of charge to increase the discharge capacity to reach the first threshold, and maintaining the commanded state of charge at the increased state of charge until the discharge capacity reaches the first threshold.
