One method of ink-based digital printing involves applying a uniform layer of damping fluid to a surface of a imaging member; Laser structuring the damping fluid layer by selectively removing portions of the damping fluid according to digital image data; and coloring the laser textured cushioning layer on the imaging element surface with an aqueous heterogeneous ink to form a printed image, wherein the aqueous heterogeneous ink coalesces before the ink is transferred to the imaging element surface.
