The device has a high sensitivity bubble level (7) that is mounted on a cam (5), which pivots about a horizontal axis (6), and a return spring. The cam is raised by a bearing supported by a carriage (1) moving in translation along a rail (2) that is provided parallel to the rule. The carrier comprises a vernier that slides opposite to a ruler in accordance to translation of the carriage on the slide. The cam is provided with a sinusoidal shape for allowing to read the differences in altitude between two sides of a rule.
