The present invention relates to a method for controlling a pressurized water nuclear reactor comprising: a core producing a thermal power; means for acquiring the average temperature of the primary coolant and the thermal power; means for regulating the temperature of the primary coolant; means for regulating the axial power distribution; the control method comprising: a first control phase for controlling the reactor in normal operation by regulating the average temperature of the primary liquid so as to correspond to a reference temperature profile (Pref) as a function of the thermal power of reactor; the method being characterized in that it comprises; a second pilot phase, called a cycle extension, occurring after the normal operation of the reactor to control the reactor in cycle extension by regulating the axial power distribution without monitoring a temperature profile of the primary liquid.
