Device for recovering the braking energy of road vehicles, comprising: a rotary machine (1) comprising a shaft (2) adapted to be connected to the drive means of a vehicle (V) and able to operate either as a hydraulic pump either in hydraulic motor; a hydraulic reservoir (12) connected by a first pipe (11) to the rotary machine (1), and a hydropneumatic accumulator (21/22/24) connected by a second pipe (20) to a rotating machine (1) , wherein said rotating machine (1) comprises a plurality of pistons whose stroke is variable and a piston stroke adjusting member operable hydraulically so as to occupy a neutral position for which the piston stroke is zero and the circulation of the hydraulic fluid through the rotating machine is zero, or active positions for which the pistons have a positive stroke and the flow of hydraulic fluid is effected.
