The invention allows for the automatic classification and valuation of properties, including domestic and business properties, using data about comparable properties obtained at the same time to generate a snapshot of the market. Comparable properties are identified 109 based on e.g. council tax band, rateable data provided by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), value per unit area, use, size, quality, type, location, rent levels, potential income generation and prominence. This may be normalized, generated iteratively to ensure statistical significance and outliers may be disregarded. A multiplier is generated based on comparison of the property data with that of comparable properties 113 and valuation is calculated from property data 105 and market data 101 using the multiplier. The market data may be real sales data or valuations. An index showing movement of relevant parts of the market may be included (Figure 2). Viability of the property for a different use (Figure 3), condition of the property and existing or potential developments, such as extensions, may be taken into account. The invention may be made available via a web portal.
