The invention relates to an environment monitoring device (30) in a motor vehicle (47), comprising a signal generating device (34) for generating a transmitted signal, at least one ultrasonic transducer (1) for converting electric oscillations into acoustic oscillations and/or vice versa, an evaluation device which evaluates an electric received signal in order to determine distances to objects (39) in an environment (31) of the motor vehicle (47), wherein the signal generating device is linked to the at least one ultrasonic transducer (1), so that the ultrasonic transducer (1) emits an ultrasonic transmitted signal into the environment in accordance with the electric transmitted signal, and the evaluation device is connected to the at least one ultrasonic transducer (1) or at least one further ultrasonic transducer (1) in order to receive the electric received signal, which is derived from the reflected ultrasonic transmitted signal at the at least one ultrasonic transducer (1) or the at least one further ultrasonic transducer (1), wherein the at least one ultrasonic transducer (1) and, if appropriate, the at least one further ultrasonic transducer (1) are arranged in the vehicle in such a way that, between the at least one ultrasonic transducer (1) and, if appropriate, the at least one further ultrasonic transducer (1) and the environment (31) of the motor vehicle (47) that is to be monitored there is respectively arranged a closed, physically formed surface of a variable component, in particular a wall (2) of a fender (3), to which the at least one ultrasonic transducer (1) or the at least one further ultrasonic transducer are bonded, and the evaluation unit (48) comprises a correlation unit (44), which forms a cross-correlation of the transmitted signal with the received signal and is also designed to determine the distances to the objects (39) in the environment (31) by using the correlation signal calculated during the correlation. The invention also relates to a method for monitoring an environment by using a cross-correlation.
