The invention encompasses the use of transition metal-free, at least one boron atom-containing Lewis acids, for example of the general formulas (I), (II) and (III), as catalysts in the thermal release of hydrogen from hydrogen storage substances, in particular aminoborane, and a system for reversibly storing hydrogen, whose hydrogen release rate can be easily controlled by temperature variation, without having to separate storage substance and release-release catalyst.
