Preparing olefins by metathesis reaction comprises providing a reaction mixture comprising at least one olefin, adding a ruthenium compound (I), and adding a Lewis acid or adding a Lewis acid and an anionic, non-coordination salt, and reacting the mixture at 30-140[deg] C, where the reaction takes place without adding an alkyne or alkynol. Preparing olefins by metathesis reaction comprises providing a reaction mixture comprising at least one olefin, adding a ruthenium compound of formula ([RuX2L1xL2y]z) (I), and adding a Lewis acid or adding a Lewis acid and an anionic, non-coordination salt, and reacting the mixture at 30-140[deg] C, where the reaction takes place without adding an alkyne or alkynol. X : anionic ligand; L1 : neutral pi-binding ligand; L2 : neutral electron donor ligand; x : 0 or 1; y : 1-3; and z : 1 or 2.
