The invention relates to a carrier (10) for receiving an X-ray cassette (15) having an X-ray detector, in particular an X-ray film, an X-ray storage phosphor plate or a solid-state X-ray detector, said carrier (10) comprising a support plate (11) for supporting the cassette (15); a first alignment device (20) for aligning and/or positioning the cassette (15) on the support plate (11) along an X axis of the support plate (11); and a first, in particular optical, sensor device (30) for sensing an X position of the cassette (15) with regard to the X axis. Moreover, the invention relates to an according X-ray system and a method for determining a size and/or orientation of an X-ray cassette (15) inserted into the carrier (10) according to the invention.
