PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for producing acetic acid, for maintaining a highly stable catalyst system in controllable low water conditions and for achieving reaction rate space-time yield (STY) of 15 g mol/l/hr and higher at water concentrations of less than 2 wt.%.;SOLUTION: A method for producing acetic acid comprises the steps of: (a) reacting methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium-based catalyst system selected from rhodium and a combination of rhodium and iridium, in a reaction mixture having a water content of 5.0 wt.% or lower, an iodide ion at a concentration in the range of 2 to 20 wt %, and methyl iodide at a concentration of 2.0 wt.% to 30.0 wt.%; and (b) introducing methyl acetate into the reaction section, in an amount equal to or larger than stoichiometric amount of water content produced through carbonylation reaction in the reaction section, such that the reaction mixture contains 1.0 to 30 wt.% of methyl acetate.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2016,JPO&INPIT
