A novel classification system for breast cancer based on normal breast cell phenotype and various expression of estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR) and vitamin D receptor (VDR). Various categories of this classification system are associated with different survival rates and prognosis. The present invention includes a method of classifying breast cancer, the method measuring levels of ER, AR and VDR in cancerous tissue, and classifying breast cancer into one of the above categories according to expression level. Steps. The present invention includes a method for predicting a patient's breast cancer prognosis and a method for determining a treatment regimen for breast cancer according to the category into which the breast cancer is classified. The present invention includes a method of treating breast cancer according to the expression profiles of ER, AR and VDR detected in cancerous tissue. A kit for detecting the expression profile is also provided.
