In general, techniques for performing spatial masking on spherical harmonics are described. By way of example, an audio encoding device that includes a processor may perform various aspects of the techniques. The processor may be configured to perform a spatial analysis based on spherical harmonic coefficients describing the three-dimensional sound field to identify a spatial masking threshold. The processor may be further configured to compress the multichannel audio data based on the identified spatial masking threshold to render the multichannel audio data from the plurality of spherical harmonic coefficients and generate a bitstream.
