PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To distinguish highly sensitively between loss occurring on an optical fiber caused by bending and the one caused by connection.;SOLUTION: An optical fiber characteristic analysis device is configured to perform the steps of: making a test light pulse having a wavelength shorter than a cutoff wavelength of a measurement object optical fiber 1 incident on one end of the measurement object optical fiber 1; separating a component of a fundamental mode LP01 and a component of a higher order mode LP11 from backscattered light generated in the measurement object optical fiber 1 by incidence of the test light pulse; and calculating a ratio of light loss of the fundamental mode LP01 to the higher order mode on the basis of the components. Then, comparing the ratio of light loss with a threshold value, when the ratio of light loss is larger than the threshold value, it is determined that the light loss is caused by bending of the measurement object optical fiber 1, and when the ratio of light loss is equal to or less than the threshold value, it is determined that the light loss is caused by axis deviation in connection of the measurement object optical fiber 1.;SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1;COPYRIGHT: (C)2016,JPO&INPIT
