A method and apparatus for establishing a super special case library and a method and apparatus for displaying characters. The display method includes intercepting a font activation message from a system font engine by a font engine middleware, wherein the font activation message includes a character code corresponding to a character displayed by an application. The system acquires the outline data corresponding to the characters from the super special case library in the nonstandard format based on the character code and the font name, and the system according to the character outline data. Transmitting outline data of the character to the system font engine to allow the font engine to display the character. With the present invention, the capacity of the character library can be increased, and the characters in the nonstandard super special case library can be recognized conveniently.
