A composition comprising chondroitin sulfate, a proteolytic enzyme, and a sulfhydryl compound for improving the bioavailability of chondroitin sulfate. The present invention relates to chondroitin sulfate (CS), as a nutritional supplement composition for the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis and related acute and chronic inflammatory processes or to maintain musculoskeletal health in humans and animals. A combination comprising one or more enzymes or enzyme mixtures having proteolytic activity and a sulfhydryl compound is described. A characteristic of the combination is that they increase the intestinal absorption of CS when administered orally. The effect of the combination is exerted on a wide range of molecular weight CS, including very low molecular weight CS samples that already have a greater bioavailability than higher molecular weight samples. This effect is exerted on CS samples of any origin.
