An autonomous breaker can apply a current through a high impedance source to a bus coupled across the breaker to measure the impedance of the bus. The status of the bus can be determined from the measurements. Based on the determined status, a fault detection procedure can be selected and implemented to determine whether a fault exists on the bus. If a fault detection procedure is implemented and no fault is detected, the breaker will close and thus the bus can be coupled to another bus.
