A large slow-running two-stroke uniflow combustion engine of the crosshead type. The engine comprises a plurality of cylinders that are each connected to a scavenge air receiver and to an exhaust gas receiver, a turbocharger with a turbine receiving exhaust gas from the exhaust gas receiver and a compressor providing pressurized scavenge air, a scavenge air path for leading the pressurized scavenge air from the outlet of the compressor of the turbocharger to the scavenge air receiver and an exhaust gas recirculation path for recirculating at least a portion of the exhaust gas from the cylinders or from the exhaust gas receiver to the scavenge air receiver. The engine further comprises a blower which forces an EGR flow into the scavenge air receiver; a sensor for providing a signal representative of the O2 level or of the CO2 level in the scavenge air receiver; and an electronic control unit (ECU) which receives the signals from the sensor. The ECU is configured to control the EGR flow in response to the signal from the sensor.
