methods for estimating the velocity of a geological layer and for forming a velocity model of a subsurface region. a method of estimating a geological layer velocity, wherein the method comprises the steps of: providing a first initial model, comprising a gap velocity associated with a subsurface site and an uncertainty associated with the gap velocity; B. providing data comprising an average square value (rms) of a velocity associated with a subsurface location and an uncertainty associated with the velocity rms; and c. estimate a second model comprising a range velocity associated with a subsurface location and an uncertainty associated with the range velocity, based on the range velocity and uncertainty of the first model, and the speed rms and data uncertainty.
