The present invention relates to the novel methacrylic acid free alkali swellable spacer emulsions: this monomer was hitherto indispensable, which makes manufacturers dependent on this raw material. These new emulsions contain a certain amount of 2-Crylamino-2-methylptopane sulfonic acid (or amps, case no: 40623-75-4). They can also be manufactured in the absence of a surfactant which prevents foaming. Finally, they are effective for thickening aqueous media, including media with a pH between 5 and 6, such as skin.
