Process for providing a former appearance to a substrate, substrate, arrangement of two coatings, and the use of effect pigments based on perlite. The present invention provides a process to give an appearance of the simulated patina or old to a substrate by using a coating composition comprising a pigment based effect of pearlite.The pigment based effect of pearlite acts as a colouring agent and matting agent, and displays a light almost independent of the angle. The process provides, for example, decorative coatings, wall which exhibit better effects of old or patina, compared to conventional effect pigments based on mica.
