The invention relates to an assembly for powering electric traction motors (17) in a rail vehicle, especially a train composition with electric energy, the assembly having: - at least one combustion engine (1) ; - at least for a combustion engine (1), a generator (3) allocated to generate the electric power is coupled, the generator (3) being mechanically coupled with a combustion engine (1), so that in the In case of a generator operation by the generator (3) it is driven by the combustion engine (1); - a rectifier converter (5) for rectifying and converting an electric alternating current generated by the generator (3); - a DC link intermediate circuit (7) which through the rectifier converter (5) is electrically coupled with the generator (3); - an alternating generator-converter (36) which is additionally provided for the rectifier converter (5) or the rectifier converter (57) operated in rectifier converter operating mode, the generator rectifier converter (36; 57) connects the intermediate circuit DC voltage (7) with the generator (3) in order to operate the generator (3) in motorized state as motor; - a control (51) for controlling the motorized operation of the generator (3), the control (51) having a signal input in order to receive a signal which signals that the combustion engine (1) is not required a driving potential, whereby the idling speeds or a range of the idling speeds of the combustion engine (1) are predetermined, and the control (51) is so shaped to receive the signal, to control such motorized operation of the generator (3) so that the combustion engine (1), at predetermined idle speeds or in the case of idle speeds within the range of the predetermined idle speeds, is driven by generator (3), and through the rectifier converter, the generator (3) is supplied with electricity from the DC intermediate circuit (7).
