The promising organism for water purification technologies and the production of energy-rich products is the Coccomyxa mucigena algae strain Maršálek & Maršálková 2012/2 deposited in the collection of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences in Třeboň. The strain of this algae is characterized by high production of both extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) and, in particular, the type of extracellular polysaccharides that have a 3.5 to 7 times larger surface area than conventional EPS coated algae with a continuous, spherical configuration. This feature makes it possible to utilize the aforementioned strain of algae for the purification of industrial wastewater from metals, sewage municipal waters from estrogens, pharmaceuticals and pesticides on the principle of increased sorption and partial biodegradation. The strain of algae also produces significant amounts of oils and glycerols (diacylglycerols and triacylglycerols) and is valuable for energy recovery of grown biomass (for example, to promote methanogenesis in biogas plants). The strain is isolated from the effluent drain and can be cultivated on municipal wastewater. It is capable of achieving a biomass concentration of 1 g / l in cultures.
