The alga of Coccomyxa mucigena of the Maršálek & Maršálková 2012/2 strain is a promising organism for water purification technologies and the production of energy-rich products, which is deposited in the collection of the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Třeboň. The strain of this alga is characterized by high production of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) and above all by the type of extracellular polysaccharide arrangement, which has a 3.5 to 7x larger surface than conventional EPS-coated algae with a continuous, spherical arrangement. This feature allows the alga strain to be used for cleaning industrial waste water from metals, sewage municipal water from oestrogen, pharmaceuticals and pesticides on the principle of increased sorption and partial biodegradation. This alga strain also produces a significant amount of oils and glycerols (diacylglycerols and triacylglycerols) and is valuable for the energy recovery of growing biomass (for example, to support metanogenesis in biogas stations). This strain is isolated from the effluent of the sewage treatment plant and can be cultivated in municipal waste water. In cultivations, it is able to achieve a biomass concentration of 1 g/l.
