A productive method to modify the surface of titanium alloy to be used as a light weight automobile disk brake rotor instead of grey cast iron is disclosed. In this method a titanium alloy disk surface is melted using a rectangular laser beam while simultaneously directing a stream of nitrogen towards the laser-disk interaction region for nitride formation. The nitrided titanium alloy surface is harder crack free and wear resistant with optimal frictional characteristics. The laser treatment with optimum process parameters covering large surface area with high production rate that is more suitable for manufacturing light weight titanium alloy automobile disk brake rotor in industrial scale
