The patent discloses a single step hydrothermal process for conversion of cellulose to industrially important levulinic acid and other commercially important compounds using zirconia as a catalyst without using any reactive gas. Further, it provides a continuous hydrothermal process for conversion of cellulose to industrially important levulinic acid and other commercially important compounds using zirconia as a catalyst without using any reactivegas.
