SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REDUCED COMPLEXITY COMPUTATIONS WITH DETAIL PRESERVATION OF DATA

A method and system for providing a compressed representation of an image, the term being interchangeably used with 3D range data, by searching along one dimension for important pixels and discarding intervening pixels, all of which may be regenerated to a good approximation. The implementation uses a metric based on projected 3D geometry of the image and assigns to each pixel an importance value. The metric is a function of its neighbours, in this case, pixels and their correlation juxtaposed with a predefined template. The method may be applied to data compression in images, applied for image generation using microscopes, applied for data matching, object detection and differentiation, obstacle detection, pick, place and route using the described hardware.
