The invention relates to a solar cell comprising at least a substrate (10) a cathode (11) a hole conductive layer (12) a bulk heterojunction photoactive layer (13) of a blend of a donor material and an acceptor material an electron conductive layer (14) and an anode (15) wherein the blend comprises at least one photoactive material compris ing a conjugated backbone system having: i) the general formula R2 imide Ar L Ar imide R3 wherein Ar L Ar is a conjugated chromophore imide is imide OCNCO R2 and R3 are organic groups bonded to the N atom of the respective imide and forming a conjugated bond with the respective imide; or. ii) repeating units (R4 imide Ar L Ar imide)n wherein Ar L Ar is a conjugated chromophore imide is imide OCNCO R4 is an organic group bonded to the N atom of the respective imide and forming a conjugated bond with the re spective imide and n is the number of repeating units.
