A PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF BIOACTIVE BONE REPAIR MATERIALS WITH ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY

Orthopedic and dental devices require metals such as Ti and Ti alloys because they are biocompatible, good mechanical strength and does not show any cytotoxicity. Although biocompatible, either they do not or very slow in direct bone formation on these metals surface. Sometimes scar tissues formed between the metallic implant and bone that prevent the bone integration and finally implant loosening. Also bacteria related infections to the implants are serious concern for the patients. Here, bioactive Ti metal with antibacterial property is reported by simple chemical and thermal treatment approach where bioactivity is provided by incorporated ions such as Ca / Mg / Sr and antibacterial activity by Ag prior to H202 treatment. Results showed that Ca / Mg / Sr / Ag containing titania surface induce bone like apatite formation in physiological body fluid solution within 3 days soaking. Silver present in titania layer gradually release into the surrounding or come in contact with bacteria on its surface and kill the bacteria, indicating the antibacterial activity of bioactive Ti metal. H202 treatment gave porous interconnected network structure on Ti metal with high surface area and presence of elements such as Ca / Mg / Sr made the surface more hydrophilic that enhance the protein adsorption and provides a better platform for the bone cell attachment and their proliferation. Since this method is very simple, economical and scalable and hence can be used in various biomedical industries.
