The invention relates to a method for optimizing on real time the fuel efficiency during the process of steel making in a blast furnace based on a control system, the control system operatively connected to the blast furnace and comprising at least one microprocessor with human-machine interface; a mass energy balance module; a fuel consumption determination module; and a display device. The method comprising the steps of:-(i) receiving in the system the composition data relating to iron ore changed with fluxes, coke, and pulverized coke (PCI) including the data representing pre-determined quantity of hot metal and slag, and the data on hot blast and value of raceway adiabatic flame temperature (RAFT); (ii) calculating the coke and PCI quantities in said MEB module based on said predetermined quantity of hot metal; (iii) calculating quantity of hot blast and total fuel requirement in the MEB module, wherein the total fuel requirement is for a sum of PCI and coke; (iv) receiving in the system data relating to actual amount of coke, PCI, and dissolved carbon in the hot metal including volumetric flow values of the top gas; (v) normalizing the actual values determined in step (iv);(vi) calculating the prevailing fuel consumption in said fuel consumption module based on input and output of carbonaceous compounds from the system; (vii) determining shaft efficiency in said fuel consumption module based on oxygen to carbon (O/c) ratio, and transmitting the processed data to the system processor; (viii) calculating the difference between the actual and ideal fuel consumption in the system; and (ix) displaying the calculated value in step (viii) on the display device for the operators to control process parameters on real time and optimize the fuel consumption.
