The present invention provides a system (100) and a method for determining the river bed sedimentation profile. The system (100) comprises of a power supply, a keypad, a river boundaries sensor, an ultrasonic sensor for detecting sand patterns at the river bed, two stepper motors, a microcontroller and a processor. The ultrasonic sensor moves horizontally and vertically to scan the specified area of river bed and the output of is converted into acceptable form of images that illustrates the river bed sedimentation profile. The system provides a low cost method for studying the details of sedimentation patterns in the river. Figure 1
