The present invention relates to the field of wireless communication. More specifically, it relates to the field of data transfer to User Equipments (UEs) in CELL_PCH mode. When a UE is in CELL_PCH state during a DRX cycle, it listens to a Paging Indicator Channel (PICH) for a time period equal to 't'PICH. If an indication for the availability of data packets to be received by the UE is detected while listening to PICH, the UE enters into a non-DRX cycle and starts monitoring High Speed-Shared Control Channel (HS-SCCH) for a time period equal to 't'HS- SCCH. The data packets addressed to the UE in the CELL_PCH state has to be forwarded by Node-B during the time period 't'HS-SCCH. Due to this stringent time requirements, it is possible that scheduling requirements can not be met for all UEs. The present invention proposes a mechanism to make available the data packets with the Node-B much before the start of the non-DRX cycle to meet the scheduling requirements. When the data packets for a UE become available with the Node-B before the start of non-DRX period, an indication of the start of non- DRX period has to be provided. The indication can be provided with a data packet transmitted on the uplink addressed to a UE in the CELL_PCH state. The High Speed-Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH) data frame is used to for the indication. One of the unused bits of new IE Flags and a Connection Frame Number (CFN) in the data frame are used.
