The invention relates to a system and a method for reducing the average fuel consumption in Diesel-electric and Diesel-hydraulic locomotives. According to the invention, the system consists of a Diesel engine (1) with the power of 1/3 of the power of the auxiliary services, which drives an electric generator (2) charging the secondary battery (3) and supplies the electric motor of the compressor (4) by means of a convector (5) as well as the remaining auxiliary services consumers, a current and voltage regulator (7), a current transducer (8) and a voltage transducer (9). As claimed by the invention, the method is based on the use of the energy stored in the secondary battery (3) so that, during the periods of maximum load, determined by the compressor (4) entering into operation, the electric generator (2) and the secondary battery (3) operate as two parallel sources, taking into consideration that 70% of the power needed by the auxiliary services is meant for the air compressor (4).
