Method and apparatus for treating dry dust from dry dust separators behind electric arc furnaces and converters for steel production. The dust is separated by means of an adjustable classifier into a zinc-rich fine fraction and a zinc-poor coarse fraction. In order to achieve an optimum separation result, the zinc concentration in the produced fine fraction and / or the coarse fraction produced is continuously measured. This measured value is used to control the separation characteristic of the classifier. The separator used preferably has an impeller (Abweiseradsichter) whose speed can be adjusted continuously for the purpose of control.
