Joint formation in basic refractory side-wall wear lining of bricks laid dry and without joints in oxygen steel converters and electric arc steel furnaces or the like, and brick for this purpose
To avoid spalling of the side-wall wear lining in converters and electric arc furnaces due to deflagrations of explosive gas/air mixtures which form in the lining from the contents of pitch, tar or plastic in the refractory lining bricks and in the ramming gaps and which, on rapid heating of the furnaces, expand greatly and, due to the dense surfaces of the lining bricks on the fire side due to the thermal expansion of the latter, cannot escape from the lining into the furnace interior, the brick surfaces of the side-wall wear lining are partially provided with kinks, so that the explosive gases can escape into the furnace interior. The kinks of the brick surfaces can have various shapes and can end before the cold and/or hot end of the bricks. Bricks with kinked brick surfaces can alternate with bricks without kinked brick surfaces. Inserts which are advantageous for furnace and slag control and for increasing the refractoriness and the like, can be introduced into the kinks in the brick surfaces.
