Filipendula extract for use in the treatment or prophylaxis of chronic pain states without identifiable organic cause, wherein the extract is obtained by extraction with 50 to 70% by weight of ethanol, wherein the extract is administered orally or parenteral and wherein the chronic pains are caused by somatoform disorders chosen psicalgia, headache, backache and chronic pain disorder with somatic and psychological factors, or chosen from vulvodynia or pain in the abdomen, shoulder, back, lumbar or spinal non-rheumatic origin, or where chronic pain are induced irritable bowel syndrome or premenstrual disorders, or where chronic pain are induced by paresthesia of the skin, or where chronic pain are induced headache acuminate, chronic paroxysmal headache, vasomotor headache, tension headache or post-traumatic headache.
