Embodiments of theinvention provide a dual insertion set (10)for supplying a fluid to the body of a patientand for monitoring a body characteristicof the patient. Typical embodiments of theinvention include a base (40), an infusionportion (30) coupled to a first piercingmember (34) and a sensor portion (20)coupled to a second piercing member (24).The infusion portion includes a cannula(33) coupled to the piercing. member forsupplying a fluid to a placement site. Thesensor portion includes a sensor (22) coupledto and extending from the base havingat least one sensor electrode formed on asubstrate and is coupled to the piercingmember in a manner that allows the sensorto be inserted at the placement site. The baseis arranged to secure the dual insertion setto the skin of a patient. Typically the infusion portion and sensor portionpiercing members are arranged such that when they areoperatively coupled to the base, they are disposed in a spatial orientationdesigned to inhibit sensor interference that may be causedby compounds present in fluids infused through the cannula.
