This invention is related a process for reducing nitrogen-containing compoundsfrom hydrocarbon mixtures using ionic liquids of general formula C + A-, whereC +represents a cation of organic or inorganic type, specifically of the typeimidazolium, pyridinium or ammonium salts, while the anion A- are derivativeswhich are halides, salts of iron (III), aluminum salts (III), acetate andbenzoate,though not exclusively. These agents act as ionic liquid extractants ofnitrogenatedcompounds contained in hydrocarbon streams through a process of liquid-liquidextraction thereby can be reduced by more than 60% the content of thesecontaminants in hydrocarbon streams.
