The invention relates to a method for detecting when asnowmobile (100) falls through ice, wherein, duringongoing operation of the snowmobile (100), at least oneinertial sensor (131, 132) determines measured values ofat least one movement variable of the snowmobile (100),the determined measured values are monitored in order todetermine whether the result is a pattern which indicatesthat the snowmobile (100) has fallen through ice, if theresult is a pattern which indicates that the snowmobile(100) has fallen through ice, a current movement of thesnowmobile (100) is compared with a movement of thesnowmobile (100) predicted from a previous movement ofthe snowmobile (100), and it is detected that thesnowmobile (100) has fallen through ice if the currentmovement of the snowmobile (100) differs from themovement of the snowmobile (100) predicted from theprevious movement of the snowmobile (100).
