The invention proposed here involves fitting an axially sliding cam surface of any desired cam profile over the existing cam surface. Depending on its axial location, the sliding cam surface presents different cam profiles to the follower. The axial location of the sliding cam is changed according to the engine speed. The changing profile of the cam surface results in variable timing and lift of the valves. It is also proposed that the actuation of axial movement of the sliding cam surface be performed using a rotary governor fitted over the camshaft with an appropriate linking mechanism. The angular velocity of the camshaft actuates the radial displacement of the governor which in turn actuates the sliding cam surface.
