The present disclosure relates generally to recycling lead-acid batteries, and more specifically, relates to purifying and recycling the lead content from lead-acid batteries. A lead recovery system (40) may include a first reactor (58) configured to receive and mix a lead-bearing material (56) and a first carboxylate source such as acetate (60) to yield a first mixture (66), wherein the first mixture includes a first lead carboxylate that is dissolved in a liquid component of the first mixture. The system may further include a second reactor (74) configured to receive and mix the liquid component of the first mixture and a second carboxylate source such as citrate (76) to yield a second mixture, wherein the second mixture includes solid particles of a second lead carboxylate and a third reactor (94) configured to receive and mix the solid particles of the second lead carboxylate and a hydroxide solution (96) to yield a third mixture which includes solid particles of lead oxide (102).
